However, the communication must be effective. Communication isn't always healthy and successful. If you want to have a strong relationship with the parents you are working for, healthy communication is the first start. Here are some tips to make sure your communication is healthy and effective.
Don't accuse, ask! If there is a miscommunication going on, don't make assume or make accusations. Assuming things or making accusations will only cause aggression and the person may feel like they are being attacked. Always ask if there is any confusion and things can be cleared up in a healthy way.
Find the best communication tool that works for both of you. If you think you sound better in email or text message, then communicate that way. But, if you feel that you communicate better face-to-face, then you should have your conversations that way. The method of communication matters because you don't want your tone to come off the wrong way and you don't want anything misconstrued.
Be honest! As we all know, honesty is the best policy. If something is bothering you, let them know. If you let things fester, your frustration will get worse, and you may end up coming off aggressive without meaning to. Parents will be happier with your honesty and may just make the adjustments you need.
And finally, be respectful! Honesty without tact is cruelty. Yes, you should always be honest with the parents you are working for, but you should also choose your words carefully and pay attention to your tone. Respect is a two-way street and if you give respect, you can expect it back.
